The September 11th Families’ Association

The September 11th Families’ Association/Tribute WTC Visitor Center is seeking active and retired members of service were present at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 and/or involved in the rescue and recovery operations to share their personal experiences on walking tours with global visitors to the World Trade Center site. The Tribute Center offers "Person to Person History," linking visitors who want to understand and appreciate the historic events of September 11th with those that experienced them. Since 2006, museum exhibits, volunteer-led walking tours and public programs have educated over a million visitors. Walking tour guides are residents or workers from Lower Manhattan, survivors, recovery workers, volunteers, or family members that lost loved ones.

Training, Commitment and Experience needs are as follows:

• Attend one training weekend (Friday evening and Saturday)

• Individual one-on-one training on how to tell your story

• Comprehensive training materials

• Enrichment and social activities

• High level of flexibility

• Strong public speaking skills

• 3 - 8 volunteer hours per month

The history of New York City and each individual involved is extraordinarily important in documenting and understanding the meaning of September 11th to our city, nation and world. We need PAPD active and retired officers to volunteer and share the contributions of all uniformed men and women of the Port Authority. If you or someone you know is interested in participating in this volunteer program, contact Tracy Grosner: volunteer@tributewtc.org, 212.422.3520 ext. 112. "NJ Residence"

The NJ Senate approved a one-gun-a-month purchase for NJ residents. The vote was 21-15. NJ has the strictest gun control laws in the Country followed by Massachusetts and Maryland. The Assembly also passed the bill a few months ago. Governor Corzine has agreed however to form a committee (task force) that will examine the laws impact on crime. This panel will also write and exclusion in the law that could lead to exempt gun collectors and competitive and recreation shooters from the law. A Collector would have to most probably list their collectibles and it may be a good idea to join a gun club or collector club. To date, four other States have this law.

Attention Port Authority Police Retirees
RPA Efforts To Secure Medicare Reimbursement
For Port Authority Police Retirees

By: Ed Curran, RPA President & Newsletter Editor

As has been previously reported at RPA meetings and in various editions of the RPA Newsletter, at the request of several Port Authority RPA members, I, along with the support and assistance of the following Port Authority RPA members, 2nd VP Mike Ferranola, Steve Brown, Marty Dunn and Artie Sweet, have been attempting to convince the Port Authority of NY and NJ, that Port Authority Police retirees, are as deserving of being reimbursed for their Medicare Health Insurance Payments, just as most police retirees throughout New York State are reimbursed.

These efforts include various items of correspondence by myself and Marty Dunn, to and from the Port Authority of NY and NJ and the various Port Authority police unions.

The response from the Port Authority Executive Directors has been: "Benefits are required to be negotiated. Since the Medicare Part B Premium reimbursement benefit is not part of the memorandum of Understanding, it cannot be offered to the Port Authority Police retirees."

My note: We do not agree with the response.

Thanks to the efforts of RPA member Jerry Barnickle (PAPD) these various items of correspondence and other related information, have been posted on ten pages of the website of The Port Authority Signal 8-2

Any suggestions or information which would assist us in our efforts to further this matter would be appreciated". e-mail us: Buckslip@prodigy.net

As reported in the March and April newsletters, as a result of the objections of certain active police and fire unions, to retired police and fire retirees being included in health insurance protection legislation, Legislators in 2003 and now again in 2004, drafted health insurance protection legislation for civilian public retirees only, thereby excluding police and fire retirees from this protection (S4986 in 2003, S6150 in 2004). A complete up to date on the bills can be found in the latest issue of the RPA newsletter.

There has been no response from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as to re-reimbursement for Medicare payments for retired members of the PAPD. We are still awaiting a response from the PA from our last request that members of the PAPD receive reimbursement payments.

Please click on the link below to review the correspondence and help us make this become a reality!
